A few years after I got married, my husband Gangadharam had to travel to Israel for work. He is going to stay there for six months. It’s sad that he would be away from the family, but what worried me the most was his food. Gangadharam is someone who loves traditional and authentic dishes. Knowing he would miss the flavours of home, I tried bringing him some comfort through meals. So, I packed Avakaya, Kandi Podi, and Appadalu for him.
There’s something special about these three staples. Whether you pair them with a meal or enjoy them on their own with plain rice, they just taste delicious. The spicy, tangy Avakaya tastes perfect with plain rice, roti, khichdi, paratha and any breakfast. Appadalu, on the other hand, are great as both a side dish and a snack.
But Kandi Podi is our favourite. It's so versatile! You can mix it with plain rice and ghee, enjoy it with Gongura pachadi or Avakaya, sprinkle it on dosa, or toss it with idli. No matter how you eat it, it always tastes amazing.
Years later, when my son Srikanth was leaving home for his job, I found myself packing the same things for him. They are perfect for a quick meal, yet filling and comforting.
