Ragi Dosa Ready Mix: A Wholesome, Crispy and Calcium-Rich Breakfast for Kids and Families
March 11, 2026

Summer mornings at our house are usually filled with the giggles and chatter of my grandchildren. But today, it is unusually quiet.

Last night, they stayed up late playing snake and ladder and building blocks with their grandfather, Gangadharam, and they haven’t woken up yet. Normally, I make sure they wake up early, even on holidays, to keep a good routine. But today, I decided to let them sleep in a little longer.

I finished my morning routine and made my way into the kitchen. The kids would be up any moment, I thought to myself as I set the milk on the stove to boil. The kitchen felt calm and quiet.

“It won’t stay calm long. Soon  the kids would be up, running after me”, I thought to myself.

Just then I heard Maitreyi enter the kitchen.

“You are up already?” I asked with a warm smile.

“What are you making for breakfast, Ammamma?” she asked, rubbing her sleepy eyes.

“What does our Maitreyi want to eat this morning?” I teased, playful.

“Dosa!” she exclaimed without hesitation. I smiled at her decisiveness.

“Alright, it is dosa then,” I said, brushing her hair gently. “Now go wake everyone up while I get dosa ready.”, I said

“We are all up, Ammamma!” Shruti announced, appearing at the kitchen door with her messy hair. Behind her, Karthikeya and Gargi were already chatting something serious in the hall.

“Great! Now, everyone, brush your teeth, freshen up, and be ready at the dining table,” I instructed.

“Gargi, make sure Karthikeya brushes properly,” I called out to my eldest granddaughter.

“You are making dosa, right?” Maitreyi asked again with excitement.

Since the kids had woken up a little late today, I decided to skip serving milk and go straight to breakfast. I wanted to make sure they wouldn’t be too full to enjoy lunch later and Dosa seemed a perfect choice.

“Yes, Maitreyi. It’s dosa,” I reassured gathering the ingredients.

I heard Maitreyi squeal in delight and rush to the bathroom, determined to be the first at the table.

Since I skipped serving milk today, I decided to make ragi dosa. Calcium is essential for growing children, especially in their morning meal. And this ragi dosa is a calcium rich choice. Every time my grandchildren visit for vacation, I always prepare a few ready mixes in advance. These mixes help me serve them tasty and healthy meals quickly, especially on busy mornings like today. Plus, having these ready mixes means I get to spend more time with the kids.

One of my favourites is the Ragi Dosa mix. As I mixed the instant dosa mix and poured it onto the hot pan, the sizzle and nutty aroma filled the air. Ragi dosas are my favourite for their incredible nutritional benefits, light and crispy texture. Packed with calcium, iron, and magnesium, these are a wholesome option, perfect for everyone, especially growing kids.

Soon, the kids gathered at the dining table.

“Ammamma, we are hungry!” Maitreyi said, her excitement for dosa clear in her voice.

“You are super fast, Ammamma!” Gargi exclaimed, as I set a plate of dosas in front of them each.

“I don’t like ragi,” Shruti said, making a face as I served her putnala chutney.

“You should eat ragi,” Karthikeya said, trying to sound just like his mom. “It’s good for your health! It has calcium, iron, and magnesium.”

I laughed at how perfectly he mimicked his mother.

“So, does that mean you also don’t like ragi?” I asked him gently.

To my surprise, all of them shook their heads in unison. “Amma makes ragi malt, and I don’t like it,” Shruti explained, and the others agreed.

“Well, then, try this Ragi dosa” I said. “It’s nothing like that ragi malt you have had. It’s crispy, light, and super yummy. It’s also good for you!” I said, trying to get them excited.

“What good, Ammamma?”, Gargi asked.

“Well,” I started, “Ragi is full of calcium, which helps keep your bones strong so you can run, jump, and play.It also has iron, which increases hemoglobin in blood and helps you stay strong. It has fiber, which is great for your tummy. Ragi has magnesium, which keeps your muscles strong and maintains your blood pressure. Plus, ragi has a low glycemic index, meaning it keeps your blood sugar levels steady. So, it’s not just tasty, but super healthy too!”

But before I could say more, the usual noisy dining table fell quiet. The kids were too busy enjoying their ragi dosas with putnala chutney. Maitreyi was the first to ask for another dosa, followed by Gargi and Karthikeya.

“Can I have one more, Ammamma?” Shruti asked with a happy smile.

As the plates emptied, the kids leaned back in their chairs, happy and relaxed.

“Ammamma, if I eat enough ragi, will I grow as tall as you?” Karthikeya asked with all curiosity.

Before I could answer, Gargi pitched in, “Why do you want to grow as tall as Ammamma?”

“To reach the snack jar she keeps on the top shelf,” Karthikeya replied with a straight face.

I smiled, patting his head. “Yes, Karthikeya, if you eat ragi every day, you will grow tall and strong.”

Shruti smirked and teased, “Now, will you really eat it every day?”

“I will!” Karthikeya said, nodding firmly.“But only if it is this ragi dosa recipe and only of Ammamma makes it”, he added

“Don’t worry,I will send this instant ragi dosa mix to your Amma.”, I replied

“Will it taste the same?” Karthikeya asked, his eyes full of hope.

“If Amma makes it, it tastes even better!” I promised.
